The Challenge
The nature of commodity products is that their utility usually supersedes their aesthetic.
The function of a USB stick is primarily in its memory capacity, and rarely in its enclosure.
We challenged ourselves to design an enclosure that would appeal to children of school age, for a back-to-school release. A primary feature that drove its success is it’s rear removable keychain clip.
A huge amount of future trend forecasting(Spring/Summer 2016) resulted in a plethora of bold and colorful custom patterns that were internally user tested to proceed a handful to production. Mimaki printing allowed production to scale on demand, and for a large variety of pattern SKUs to be produced without the additional cost of tooling via pad or screen printing.
SanDisk lore is that revenue from these USB sticks alone outperformed the many previous generations of USB sticks. Success.
