The Challenge

Designing a Quantum computer for data centers requires dimensional, ventilation, and power constraints. This standardization is what makes most data racks ubiquitously black sheet metal boxes. How can IonQ stand out from crowd as an industry leader in Quantum computing?

IonQ’s rack-based modular structure enables seamless scalability by connecting core QPU units with additional peripheral modules to boost system capacity. Designed for fast setup and effortless maintenance, the system features lightweight configurable components, secure flush handles, and the flexibility to arrange units in rows for optimized data center integration.

It fits right into a standard data center - a first for any quantum computer.

The Experience

Utilizing metaphor, the invisible qualities of quantum computing were extracted and codified across the units in order to communicate a scalable and memorable story and identity, not only for IonQ but for quantum computing as a whole.

IonQ’s senior physicist Kai Hudek explains that “quantum cubits are vibrations of atoms in a chain based on synthesized waves of light, most analogous to playing music, like coordinated vibrations in a symphony.” Likewise, the etched pattern across the doors features a mesmerizing mathematical arrangement inspired by everything metaphorical about quantum: vibrations, waves, computation, levitation, isolation, and the qubit’s journey across a waveform.

Additionally, the center lighting strip is a status bar that quickly gives users insight into what state the computer is in. Flush stainless steel door handles don’t impede walking in tight data center rows, and are lockable with a custom tool for security.
